Job Description - Garden Centre and Farm Market Associate

We are a family-owned seasonal garden centre, nursery and farm market operating since 1975 in beautiful Oro-Medonte.  Our team members take great pride in offering our customers a unique and enjoyable experience.  Our staff are friendly, knowledgable, passionate about plants, people & food, and enjoy working in a fast paced environment.

  • All our positions require movement on your feet (standing and walking) as well as repeated bending and lifting.
  • We work in a range of weather conditions... sunny, rainy, hot and cold days... so a tolerance of working in a variety of environments is a must.
  • Our garden centre and nursery is open 7 days per week with Friday, Saturday and Sunday being our busiest days so the ability to work weekends is mandatory.
  • We are located in a rural area with no public transportation so a reliable means of getting to work is essential.
  • Please note, Ego’s is an agriculture/farming business and employees are classified as an agricultural employee under the ESA

 

About the Role:

As a Garden Centre & Farm Market Associate, you will be responsible for assisting in greenhouse and nursery, and enhancing our visitors purchasing experience in our retail areas including our on-farm market. You provide informed advice and assistance with locating products and providing plant suggestions. In addition to providing exceptional customer service, you will be responsible for working with our team to maintain the plants in your area and keep produce displays fresh and appealing.

What Does Your Average Day Look Like?

 

  • Set up and maintaining attractive displays of fresh produce, market shop merchandise and assisting with plant care as needed.
  • Replenishing inventory, ensuring accurate pricing and signage 
  • Handling customer inquiries and providing excellent customer service
  • Learn plant varieties and care information for a wide range of products
  • Maintain clean and organized garden centre and market shop areas
  • Care for and maintain plants (watering, pruning, etc) in seasonal displays
  • Operate POS system
  • Perform tasks assigned by manager and follow any given instructions

 

 

What You Bring To The Table:

  • Positive attitude, self-starter and takes initiative
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and take direction
  • Strong communication skills
  • Charismatic and a team player
  • Reliable form of transportation (public transit is not available to this location)
  • Customer service experience, or customer-forward attitude
  • Plant and produce knowledge or willingness to learn
  • Attention to detail, strong problem solving and time-management skills
  • Experience operating a POS system 
  • Capability to perform physically demanding work, repetitive tasks and lifting

 

Availability Requirements:

  • We’re open 7-days a week and require team members to work weekdays and weekends 
  • Hours of operation vary based on the time of year but are generally between 9 am – 5 pm daily

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Standing for 8+ hour shift (outside of breaks)
  • Can handle working in greenhouse and nursery conditions (direct & indirect sunlight; high humidity; hot and cold temperatures; wind, rain and snow)
